Applicants should have a sufficient knowledge of the physical therapy profession to make an informed career choice. Applicants must demonstrate success in academic and professional aspects of the program. Personal interviews are required for applicants who reach the final stage of the admission process.

If two applications are essentially equal, preference will be given to the North Carolina resident. Until further notice, the following are recommended but not required. However, we strongly encourage to opt for letter grade if available. Applicants should, per PTCAS instruction, continue to monitor their application to ensure materials transcripts, letters of recommendation, verified PT hours, etc. The admissions requirements for consideration to our DPT program are detailed below.

Please read them carefully. There are no exceptions to the requirements outlined below. However, for our program admissions, we strongly encourage our applicants to opt for letter grade if available. Semester equivalents of the following courses are required to be considered for admission. These courses can be taken online or in-person at any accredited four-year institution or community college.

Courses are weighed equally. For example, a physics course taken at a community college is not given less weight than a course taken at four-year college or university. Prerequisite courses must be completed at a regionally accredited school in the United States or Canada. This includes community colleges. Course descriptions here are to be used as guides and suggestions. We do not accept substitutions for entry-level biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology courses as these entry-level courses are generally prerequisites for the higher level prerequisites.

For example, abnormal psychology could not be used to replace the general psychology requirement. Understand that each prerequisite course has been established to ensure that every applicant has the basic foundation necessary to enter this program. Some courses are too narrow and others too broad in their focus and content, making them unacceptable substitutions.

We are glad to help you navigate prerequisite course requirements. Please send requests only for those courses that do not clearly meet the noted requirement. Do not verify courses that meet the requirements. For example, if your school offers General Chemistry I or Introduction to Chemistry I then you can feel confident that it will meet our general chemistry I requirement. PTCAS has two additional questions that are asked of every applicant. Observation hours with a physical therapist are currently recommended, but not required due to the challenges from the COVID pandemic.

The following guidelines are provided as a recommendation to confirm that physical therapy is the right career for you. Through the generous donations of alumni and friends, the Division of Physical Therapy provides scholarships to some students. Prospective applicants who are offered admission are automatically considered for all available scholarships and awards. All prerequisites must be complete with a minimum prerequisite GPA of 3. This will be the application portal for most DPT programs. Visit institutions and speak with program and admissions counselors. Become familiar with APTA, best practices, health care issues, and trends in the field. Surface level knowledge is not good enough. DPT applicants must have a holistic understanding of the field and be able to articulate why they want to be a PT!

High grades in science prerequisites are important. If possible, take additional science courses and participate in research projects which will make you more competitive. Some schools participate in early decision. If you choose this option you cannot apply to any other school until after you find out if you are accepted.

Applicants will usually find out by the end of September.
